Blog #006 - Weddings
I love weddings and everything that goes with it. Don’t you?
Say yes to the dress is one of my favorite programs. I try to watch it every day because it makes me feel happy to see the joy on the bride’s face when she finally finds her dress. It’s magical!!
As I told you in Blog #1, I married my high school sweetheart WJ, when we were only 21 years old. Nowadays, it’s not common to marry that young.
My Wedding Dress
I had designed my dress, a big puffy one like Lady Diana wore on her wedding to Prince Charles. A seamstress who made ballroom dresses made it for me. There were 100 meters of lace only in the dress’s skirt, which made the dress very heavy. But I didn’t mind as I felt like a princess who was marrying her prince. WJ wore a gray tuxedo with tails and a top hat; he looked so handsome.
We had a horse-drawn carriage to bring us to the town hall to have a wedding ceremony.
The location was exceptional as The town hall was build in 1746 as a residential building, and from 1814 it was used as a town hall. The main wedding hall has gold leather wallpaper on the walls, and the entrance and stairwell are decorated richly with rococo stucco and high-quality wood carvings.
We had a few men from The Volendam opera choir dressed in their world-famous traditional clothes who sang for us during the ceremony. Over the years, the choir performed many times together with world-famous soloists from well-known opera houses like Covent Garden, La Scala, Wiener Volksopera, Teatro di Roma and the Metropolitan in New York.
Traditional Dutch Barrel Organ
After the ceremony, we had a carriage tour of our city, and the photographer took photos. I remember the busses with tourists stopping to take pictures of us.
Then we went to the hall where we had our reception and our party. There was a traditional dutch barrel organ playing outside on the square to greet us when we arrived.
I’ll never forget it was a sunny and scorching day, and all the guests were dancing and singing in the square around the barrel organ.
After the beautiful reception, the delicious dinner, we had a fantastic party with the highlight of a famous dutch singer Piet Veerman (Leadsinger from The Cats 1964 – 1985. After that he was a solo artist. He got a few # 1 hits and more than 30 golden records).
Is was a magical day that I will never forget.
Mirrors for Weddings & Anniversaries
Compared to the United States, the Netherlands is boring when it comes to weddings. Especially way back when we married. We didn’t have unique wedding proposals, bridesmaids, groomsmen, or flower girls, and it wasn’t common to say your wedding vows.
I guess that’s why I love making wedding mirrors. Because whenever we receive a new order which is wedding related, the staff knows, “this one is Debbie’s.”
Oh, Yes! I love to see all the pictures, read the wedding vows, and then make a stunning wedding-mirror. I also love to design a table plan mirror or create a mirror of moments for newlyweds or wedding anniversaries.
When it comes to weddings, you Americans are so romantic, and that’s what I LOVE !!!!
A BIG HUG to all of you and please STAY SAFE,
